Fermentation of carbohydrates: Helicobacter spp. can neither ferment nor oxidize carbohydrates. Exception: H. pylori, which can oxidize glucose to acetate.
Spec. Char.:
Disease:H. heilmannii cause mild chronic gastritis but may also be associated with peptic ulceration in humans. Clinical signifacance in animals has not been proved, but can often be isolated from cats.
Hosts: Cat, dog, pig, primates and other carnivors.

Taxonomy/phylogeny:
 
About 35 species have been described within the genus Helicobacter, and this genus is most closely related to Campylobacter, Arcobacter and Sulfurospirillum.H. heilmannii is closely related to H. felis, H. bizzozerini and H. salomonis.
